Trailer Thursday: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Still stuck in the doldrums of winter, here's another selection to look forward to for the summer. If you like Steve Carrell in quiet, lonely, everyman mode and don't find Keira Knightly too annoying, you may find something in this edge of the apocalypse comedy. Seems like a sweet story, but one we've seen a thousand times over in the last 10 years. On the other hand, you could be watching Ghost Rider. Here is Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

Trailer Thursday: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

It's February, which means if you're headed to see a new movie you're sure to be disappointed. Not that there's anything wrong in particular with February movies, just that they're usually a little lacking in plot... and character... and acting... and direction, editing, casting, lighting, photography, sound... heck, it wouldn't surprise me if the craft services was just a bunch of walnuts. So if you're not running out to see one of these masterpieces and have your Oscar Ballot all filled out, here's a trailer to excite you for summer.  I give you Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

(Disclaimer: This film may also be short on plot, character, etc. but Honest Abe is wielding a hatchet so all is forgiven.)

Trailer Thursday: Rampart

If you aren't planning to dress as your favorite (potentially racist) Gungan for the superfluous re-release of Phantom Menace in 3D this weekend, save yourself 5 bucks and two hours of looking like an idiot in glasses that comfortably fit no one by checking out Rampart instead. Playing in select theaters tomorrow (Feb 10th). Woody Harrelson plays a dirty cop with a penchant for violence in LA, in the same year that George Lucas began ruining your childhood. Looks pretty gritty - maybe not as exciting as pod racing, but gritty.

Trailer Thursday: Jeff, Who Lives at Home

I like Jason Segal, I like Ed Helms (especially his recent turn in Cedar Rapids), and most of the time I like Susan Sarandon. So I guess what I am saying is that I'll probably like this movie. I'll have to wait until March to know for sure though.

Trailer Thursday: Moonrise Kingdom

Fear not hipsters, no longer will you have to sustain yourselves on PBR and re-runs of Portlandia. Your prophet returns with his next opus. That's right. Wes Anderson has just released the trailer for his next feature film Moonrise Kingdom. I have to admit that I have seen and intermittently enjoyed all of his films. There is something to be said about a movie whose kitsch can make you smile one minute and want to hurl yourself off a cliff the next. I'd be interested to hear your own impressions in the comments.

Trailer Thursday: 250 of the films of 2011 in one trailer

It's January. That means we are now entering the winter movie doldrums where all the major studios agree to release the crap that has been sitting around on their shelves all year. So instead of forcing yourself to watch whatever pathetic excuse for a film is debuting tomorrow sit back and enjoy this cut of footage from 250 of the films released last year.

Trailer Thursday: The Flowers of War

How long has it been since you've seen a World War II film? Now, how long has it been since you've seen a World War II film featuring Japan's imperial intentions for Asia? Was it a long time ago, maybe the incredible Empire of the Sun? Who was that kid, where's he been? Busy, he's been very busy.

I bring you The Flowers of War. Set during Japan's invasion of China and starring that kid - who grew up to be Oscar-winner Christian Bale. Opening tomorrow in limited release, the film is nominated for the Golden Globes' Best Foreign Language Film. Yes, it's in English. No, no one understands the rules for that category.

Trailer Thursday: Men in Black 3

This weekend pretty much all the major releases are sequels (mission impossible, Sherlock Holmes, and Alvin and the Chipmunks). So I thought it would be only appropriate that today's trailer be yet another sequel. Will Smith returns from his three year hiatus channeling Jordan's mustache to revive a franchise whose last film was released ten years ago. I give you Men in Black 3 (or MIB³):

Trailer Thursday: Joss Whedon's Horror Flick

It's shaping up to be a crappy movie weekend as the two wide movie releases don't look promising. New Year's Eve is currently at 6% on the tomatometer and looks to be the pointless star vehicle that the previews promised whereas The Sitter, while likely being the last we will ever see of chubby (read: funny) Jonah Hill, only has one review at this time -- not a good sign. That being said, I think we shouldn't dwell on the crappy present but instead should look forward to a brighter cinematic tomorrow.

I give you The Cabin in the Woods. This one really caught my eye. It's directed by Joss Whedon, creator of the cult sci-fi show Firefly. You wouldn't expect Whedon to do horror, and I guess that is the point, as this movie claims to be anything but your typical horror film.
