The Celebrity Economy

Nymag has a great series of analyses on "The Celebrity Economy." It's a combination of my two favorite things: statistics and pop culture. My favorite is on the cost of celebrities' kids:

Expenses:
$70K–$130KFor each nanny—many stars double up. They pay more for English accents and graduate degrees. And discretion will cost you, too.
$95KTutor for Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s 5-year-old in Latin, Greek, sailing, and philosophy.
$600KPart of the pampering arms race: a solid-gold rocking horse for BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z’s Blue Ivy.
$100KAnnual cost of a 6-year-old’s stylist. After all, the kid’s look complements the star’s.
Gains:
$11M
For baby pictures (if you’re Brad and Angelina, anyway).
$8M
The net worth of child star Jaden Smith. Shouldn’t a celebrity’s kid learn to foot some bills?

  1. How did Jaden Smith make any money? That little fucker should be fined billions for ruining The Karate Kid. Ok, to be fair Hillary Swank ruined it first, but still..

  2. To be fair, Ralph Machio should also take some blame, and I think there might be a little left over in my "blame bag" for Pat Morita for sticking around to do a third film.
