Did you "Remember, remember the Fifth of November"?

So it's the 6th, but still a great time to reflect on Guy Fawkes, that religious extremist who, on November 5th, 1605, failed in an attempted bombing of the British Parliament. Yes, the same fellow whose caricatured face is worn on the mask of the hero in the graphic novel and film V for Vendetta wasn't such a good Guy, as it turns out. Now though, seems some folks down at the Occupy Wall Street events have taken to donning his mask as an image of violent governmental overthrow... wait, that can't be right. Oh no, here it is - a protester quoted in a CBS/AP story said, "It's not about bombing anything; it's about being anonymous - and peaceful." Well, that's not quite an accurate reading of history... May I suggest a nonviolent image? How about Oscar the Grouch? Pretty angry guy - no gunpowder.

  1. Please note this is neither an endorsement nor a condemnation of Occupy Wall Street and related events. I just think the masks are a terrible idea. Really cool movie, though.
