Smart People Like Good Beer: #2 La Fin Du Monde

Alright folks, it's time for you to dump your Schlitz down the shitter where it belongs with the rest of the sewage and break out some good beer. Today's beer review comes from a reader request. Ayala asked me to do some honor to her homeland, our neighbor to the north, and look at some Canadian beer. To that end I bring you La Fin Du Monde from the Unibroue Brewery in Chambly, Quebec.

Unibroue was incorporated in 1993, operated by Quebec natives before being sold to Sleeman in 2004, and later acquired by Sapporo in 2004. So I'm now drinking a French-Canadian beer, sold by the Japanese.

La Fin Du Monde, or "The End of the World" in French, is characterized as a Belgian-style tripel, golden ale. It has an impressive array of medals from various international competitions including the World Beer Championships and the World Beer Cup.

La Fin Du Monde is approximately 9.0% ABV. It's cloudy golden-orangish hue with a decent white head. The aroma is very spicy, with coriander probably being the strongest smell. On tasting, you can definitely taste them as well, along with some honey and malts. As with many Belgian style ales that I've has a definitive yeasty flavor as well. It finished with a nice sharp aftertaste that lets some of the spices linger for a few seconds.

I'm going to give La Fin Du Monde a 95, probably buoyed by a slight bias towards Belgian beer.

Beer Advocate readers give it a combined rating of 96, based on 2479 reviews, while the experts weigh in at a 100. Apparently they like Belgians too. They suggest pairing with a pungent cheese such as Limburger or Gorgonzola. Fuck that.

Over at Ratebeer we see an adjusted ranking of 99 based on 2235 reviews.

So, a decent amount of agreement. I'm always hesitant to near the 100 mark unless the stuff makes me start hearing colors or tasting music, so my mid 90's are probably the same as the others' near 100's.

Ok, until next time, stop buying shitty beer. Quality over quantity and all that jazz.

  1. This is the only beer I've ever received as a gift. If memory serves me correctly, I received it as a white elephant gift and then re-gifted it to you. I can't believe it took you five years to drink it.

  2. Thanks Jordan! It's nice to know that a solid "Canadian" beer can continue to have such good quality despite all the changes in management:)

  3. Another great Unibroue beer is Le Maudite. Its one of the best tasting beers I've ever had. Whenever I can find a bottle, I get it. For some reason its a little harder to find than Fin du Monde, but well worth it.

  4. Yeah Ben, I'm a fan of the brewery in general, Le Maudite is great, and another personal favorite would probably be Trois Pistoles if you like a darker beer.
